Conference on poverty provides strategies

New blood comes to the CenterStage
New Performing Arts Director Stephanie Newman has come to Umpqua Community College with new ideas and new ways to teach drama students. Newman taught at performing arts colleges in Hollywood and New York as well as acted in several roles. Full Story
Board of Trustees may increase tuition
The school board is near approving a $10 per credit tuition increase. The increase has already been approved at the first of two board meetings; the first held on April 10. The next and final reading will be held May 8, where the board will vote for or against this increase. Full Story
Security deals with knife concerns
Questions regarding the UCC policy on concealed weapons and/or knives on campus have been raised following recent events on campus, such as students expressing concerns over how knives are being used on campus. Full Story
Culinary students and Mercy Medical Center
The Culinary Arts program partnered with Mercy Medical Center to develop some low fat health menu items for Mercy’s March Facebook theme. Two representatives from Mercy filmed the students making the items. Full Story

The possibility of a fellow classmate walking to their preferable phone booth and stepping out as Superman may never cross anyone’s mind. However, two UCC students did jump off a fire truck Saturday, April 6, outfitted and ready to battle a blaze of superman proportions. Full Story
Winners chosen for Flash Fiction February
During the month of February, the Student Life Office held a contest called Flash Fiction. The second and third place Flash Fiction stories are presented here. The first place story will be featured in the next issue of The Manistream. Full Story

Amid soaring tension and bellicose, saber-rattling statements, the Korean peninsula continues to inch closer to a military conflict. Hawks from both the United States and North Korea are openly calling for war, while calmer leaders have—so far—been able to keep the peace. Full Story

The film adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s The Host hit theaters March 29. The question of whether or not The Host would live up to the Twilight Saga stardom was answered during its opening weekend when The Host only made $11 million across 3,202 theaters. Full Story
