It was a tale of two halves for the UCC men’s squad in a Feb. 5 loss to the Lane Titans (12-11, 5-4 South).

After a hard-fought first half battle, Lane capitalized on their size in the backcourt and handed the Riverhawks (5-16, 1-8 South) an 86-67 setback.

The Titans took an early lead, jumping to a 29-17 advantage over UCC with 6:25 to play in the first half. A Lane attempt to pull away was stopped in form of Mishima Gray. The Riverhawk point guard went to work, taking advantage of a pair of Titan turnovers by hitting a 3-pointer and a pair of free-throws, capping off an 8-0 run cutting the Titan lead to 33-29.

Both teams would trade baskets leading up to halftime including a trey by Riverhawk Derrick Wattman closing the half 44-39 Titans.

Hopes for a second half push by the Riverhawks quickly faded as Lane stretched its lead early. UCC shaved the Titan lead to 50-43 following Gray’s free-throw with 16:52 to play. The seven point deficit was the closest the Riverhawk men got.

The Titans then went on a 15-3 run highlighted by an alley-oop dunk with 8:55 to play pushing the score to 55-73. Lane cruised to an 86-67 victory behind 20 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks from their 6’9’’ center Zach Kirschbaum.

UCC’s Gray had a game high 24 points, six dimes and tied for the team lead in boards with six. Freshman Derrick Wattman added 15 points, while Torrmall Thomas contributed eight points and five rebounds. UCC men’s next home game will be against Linn-Benton Feb. 19, at 7:30 p.m.
