“Five Women Wearing the Same Dress”

UCC’s Centerstage is putting on a production of “Five Women Wearing the Same Dress” this fall, starting Dec. 10.

The play is a satire of child abuse, drug addiction, sexuality and racism in American culture portrayed through five distinctly different bridesmaids.

Playwright Alan Ball uses the bridesmaids to parody the stereotypes women face in modern society: the slut, the zealot, the lesbian, the bride and the traveler. And through these clichés, he explores women’s changing roles.

The bridesmaids find themselves confined to a room after the wedding reception where they begin to interact with each other. They soon learn that they have something in common: they’ve all been hit on or have had a sexual experience with the same man. And through their interaction and dialogue, Ball ridicules society’s views on women.

Kellene Soder will be making her directorial debut with this production.

When asked if she was nervous about her first show, she simply responded, “Nope, none. I am very confident.”

She explained that she had worked with Dean Remick, who most recently directed UCC’s production of “The Producers.” She said she is fully prepared for anything. Remick is currently working with Soder as the producer and technical director for the production of “Five Women Wearing the Same Dress."

It is too late for anyone to be cast in the current show, as the final auditions have already passed. There are, however, some ways for people to get involved. Kayleen and Dean both said that they need a lot more help with the set, and technical aspects of the fall play. People who are interested in helping should go to the Centerstage theatre and volunteer.

Posters containing release information will be displayed around campus with information about production dates as the information becomes available.

The Mainstream is a student publication of Umpqua Community College.
