Local communities support UCC apprentices

The annual Trade Show for Apprentices was held in the Student Center cafeteria Nov. 5. The event was sponsored by the apprenticeship department and Platt Electric.

Over a dozen providers were present at the event including Platt Electric, Shaffer, Crown, Dewalt, Klein, Fluke, Lutron, Dottie, Greenlee, Milwaukee, Cutler Hammer and 3M. Many of the businesses offered free gifts to apprentices such as $10 gift certificates and prizes.

“The purpose was to educate students and apprentices in products that save the industry time, and to make students aware of new equipment and equipment changes,” said Lee Bowman, Platt Electric, director of trade.

Platt Electric supported all the electrical apprentices with a tool bag containing safety glasses, a voltage detector, wire connectors, nob and service staples, a wrench, a cable ripper, a box cutter, a cushion-grip scratch awl, both Phillips and straight-head screw drivers, a multi-bit magnetic-tipped screwdriver, a sheet rock saw, a $10 gift card, duct tape bandages, ear plugs & carrying case, a hat, a travel mug, a electrical reference book and more.

Wilfong bought pizza and soda for the three dozen apprentices who attended the event, and apprentices received training hours for attending.

“It’s an outlet for them to come and relax and socialize with their peers while they become familiar with the products of their trade and the suppliers that provide them,” said Ruth Ann Wilfong, apprenticeship coordinator.

And, according to Wilfong, Platt also offers special prices in their stores for apprentices who show their I.D. cards.

The event was free for apprentices and their families.
