ASUCC Winter Projects

The student council has been working since last year on developing a student food basket program. “Project Cans” will debut in winter term. The pick-up location for “Project Cans” will be behind the cafeteria to allow students some privacy when picking up food boxes. Donations are still being accepted, and eventually the student council will purchase items for the pantry as well.

The annual Valentine’s Day Fundraiser is planned again this year with proceeds going to the New Beginnings no kill animal shelter. Student Council will provide balloons, valentine duckys and flowers that students can purchase in advance on Feb. 12 in the student center. The items can be picked up or can be delivered to classrooms free of charge. All items are $1.00 and because Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday, the event will be on February 12.

Student Council also plans a “National Board Game Day” with games like Scrabble, Yatzee and possibly UNO in the student center. Donations of additional board games are always welcome.

ASUCC will sponsor a one-day event for students to decorate a visor any way they want called “Hat Day.” Categories will be most original, funniest, and overall best hat. Judging will be at 12:30 p.m. the day after the contest in the student center lobby. Students can also practice their creativity with another mask decorating day for Mardi Gras Other activities include Trivia Day, Popcorn Day, and Oatmeal Month.

Student council has also been studying possibilities for better recycling bins on campus as well as ideas for using compost from foliage around campus. One idea was to study whether clippings and waste from grounds keeping could be used in the viticulture program.

“UCC just doesn’t have the space for these things which is why we are working so hard to solve some of these problems,” said Osborn.

ASUCC is also working to be more sustainable by using Facebook where student council minutes as well as agendas can be found to save on paper and toner used in paper copies.
