Improving Umpqua.edu for ease of navigation

The college’s website is being reinvented and will be more attractive and easier to use, according to Taizo Tokuda, UCC’s Webmaster.

Tokuda in an email interview promises that the content will be more current "with improved navigability.”

The webpage is being designed with the “three-click” rule, which is a web design principle that any user should be able to find any information they are looking for with a minimum number of clicks.

“The look and feel of the new website is the biggest change users will see. Other changes are how they can access content that they need. For example, on the new website, under the Current Students page, they will see practically all the links to everything that is related to current students. This page will serve as a ‘one-stop’ index page, so to speak, from which students can find what they are looking for much easier than the current website,” Tokuda stated.

The new changes will not affect UCClife or its users. UCClife is separate from the college website and nothing will change on that system. The link to UCClife will remain at the top right-hand corner on the new website.

The future webpage will also allow the different departments of the college community to add, change and maintain more up-to-date information that will be of more interest to students, staff and the public.

“A good example of may be the Athletic department. Many times, their games are scheduled in the evenings and weekends. With the new website, they can post announcements on the game results immediately after the game, if they so choose,” according to Tokuda.

A dedicated link on new website will provide easier access to the Umpqua.edu email and Angel, making them both easier access for students and faculty.

Access to library resources will also be greatly improved with a dedicated link on every page of the new website, so students can access the Library from any page with just one click.

“This new website provides us an exciting opportunity to make the college website a collaborative work of all departments instead of a solitary work done by just one department and a webmaster” stated Tokuda.

Students, staff and visitors to umpqua.edu will see these changes when the new system goes live on Feb. 1.
