Tuition rises again

Umpqua Community College students will pay an increase in tuition and fees next year due to a 10 percent cut in the general budget.

“There are extra costs that someone would not think needs funding,” said Beverly Brandt, who has worked as the vice president for administrative services for approximately four years. “Things like utilities, paper products, hiring new faculty, cleaning and other needs that need funding.”

The plan is to permanently increase fees and tuition costs by one dollar for the next two years. Currently, UCC has the lowest tuition cost for community colleges in the state and is second lowest if fees are included. The increase will bring tuition up to $66 a credit next year.

The tuition increase will potentially avoid a bigger increase, like Rogue Community College, who is raising their tuition cost by $10 a credit for the 2010-11 school year.

“The board is conservative about raising tuition; they will only raise it when they have to,” added Brandt.

“We understand it’s not cheap to go to school and we want to make sure students keep coming back.”
