Bookstore raffles iPad

One lucky student or staff member will win a 16gb Apple iPad from this term’s bookstore raffle.

Raffle tickets cost $1 and can be purchased from the campus bookstore cashiers from now until the deadline at 1:00 p.m. Nov. 19. The raffle, open to UCC students and faculty, is a public relations event to promote the bookstore, and more than one raffle ticket can be purchased to increase the odds of winning.

The raffle is not open to bookstore employees.

Proceeds from the raffle ticket sales will go to pay for the iPad. The bookstore’s goal is to collect enough money from raffle sales to cover the retail price of the iPad.

This will be the first raffle the bookstore has had in two years. Past raffle items have been turkeys and a bicycle. “The iPad was the newest thing to come out,” said Cathy Vaughn, bookstore manager. “It’s a fun way to help students get something they normally couldn’t afford.” At $499 from the Apple store, the 16gb iPad is out of reach for most students.

The iPad can be used to check and send email, view photos, watch movies, play games, listen to iTunes, read a book or browse the web. The device will hold a charge for up to 10 hours of web browsing and thousands of apps are available for download. Its 7.5 inch by 9.5 inch size and 1.5 pound weight make it a convenient alternative to a backpack full of textbooks for students who use the iPad to download their course readings.

The most popular downloads currently are games (62 percent of all premium apps purchased are games, according to Nielsen ratings). Books(54 percent of downloads) and then music (50 percent) are the next most popular apps followed by shopping (45 percent) and news (45 percent).

Bookstore sale revenue is routed back into UCC’s general fund, a savings which has helped the college during recent budget crunches.

“We were able due to increased use of the bookstore to re-route some of that revenue so that we were able to avoid laying off staff or increasing tuition during the last budget cut from the state,” said UCC President Blaine Nisson.

The bookstore will hold more raffles in the future and hope to sponsor one raffle per term.
