Great ways to kill time on campus
Rising gas prices keep students on campus longer between classes

Homework(obviously) – Do your homework while waiting for your next class at UCC and you’ll have free time when you get home.

Tutor – If you excel in a certain subject, ask a teacher to refer you to the tutoring program.  Sign up for hours when you don’t have class and earn a little extra money.

Netflix – For a meager eight dollars per month you can get a Netflix Instant subscription that allows you to watch unlimited movies and TV shows.  With a pair of headphones you can sit in any public place and watch movies uninterrupted.

Hulu – Like Netflix instant, but free.  It has much more TV shows and fewer movies.  The single problem is that they only show the last 5 episodes that have aired of each show.  Visit Hulu.com for some free entertainment.

Take a walk – A good way to kill time and exercise your heart is to take a walk around the campus and get more familiar with where different buildings are. Some faculty members can be seen in the late afternoon taking a jog up College Road to Highway 99.   The faculty members might be willing to welcome company on their jogs.

Bird-watching – Behind Jackson Hall is a Rotary sponsored bench that overlooks the river, a lovely place to watch for wildlife. Birds are commonly found around campus, with larger birds such as ospreys found closer to the river. The UCC library offers books on bird-watching including The Audubon Society Handbook for Birders, by Stephen W. Kress and The Bird Watcher’s Bible, by George Laycook.

Art Gallery – Inside the Whipple Fine Arts Center is usually an art gallery display. Currently, different types of gloves plaster the walls. The art gallery commonly displays different art styles that are worth a visit.

Auto Shop – Lockwood Hall is the home of UCC’s auto shop where students may be able to repair the vehicles of fellow students depending on what the class is learning. Interested students can go in and inquire about what the shop is currently repairing and when. It benefits the students with the class and the students with car troubles.

Join a Club – UCC offers a variety of clubs that students can join. These clubs include the Association of Foreign Languages, Phi Beta Lambda, Phi Theta Kappa, Debate Club, Non-Traditional Students Club, Nursing Club and Skills USA. For more information about these clubs and how to join, contact Marjan Coester at 541-440-7749, or e-mail her at marjan.coester@umpqua.edu.

Throw around a football or Frisbee – It’s a common site to see students playing Frisbee on larger campuses, why not on ours?  You can get a Frisbee from the dollar store or a football from Ross for cheap.

Read a book – Yes, we do have a library.  Yes, they do have a huge selection of books.  Try reading a classic such as To Kill a Mocking Bird or 1984.  Students might even be eligible to receive extra credit from teachers for reading a book.  Just ask.

UCC Library – The campus library not only offers books to read, but also I-Pad’s and laptop’s to use as well as movies to watch and music to listen to. Students can check out CDs and DVDs. They have an assortment of films to see, some of which are commonly recommended watches by teachers.

Take a Nap – After homework, walking and playing Frisbee, a nap is definitely in order. There are a few places students can take a quick nap on UCC campus. The student lounge provides cozy couches, the library also provides couches, as long as no one else is using them, and there is always your car and what is known as “the cave.” The cave, provided by Rodney Snook, is a room in the men’s locker room equipped with blankets and pillows. Naps are good for students who spend the night hours working on homework and must wake up early to get to class
