Moving students to move words

"In truth, for sooth, Shakespeare died, yet his words of prose live on inside."

To celebrate National Poetry Month, the UCC library and the Student Life office are sponsoring a magnetic poetry contest. Magnetic boards, lined with word magnets are set up in the Campus Center, near the information desk, and in the UCC Library.

A member of the student life office will take snapshots of the most well thought out poems at 4 p.m. each weekday, and post them online at http://uccpoetry.blogspot.com, where students may view and vote for their favorites. Since the beauty of a poem is often in the eyes of the beholder (or the writer, in this case), competitors may want to keep in mind the advice of the famous English Romantic poet, John Keats: "Poetry should surprise . . . . It should strike the reader as a wording of [the poet’s] own highest thoughts and appear almost a remembrance.”

The contest was a joint project between UCC’s Librarian, Kaite Cunion and Student Life’s Marjan Coester. “I thought it would be cool to get a public space to share their thoughts, images and poetry.” Cunion explains.

There is also poetry space next to the magnet board in the library for students to post any non magnetic images, thoughts, or ideas.

The contest will end on April 28. The winner will have his or her poem announced April 29. This is an anonymous contest and only the winner will know who wrote the masterpiece.

The Mainstream is a student publication of Umpqua Community College.
