TOP Smooths Transition From College to University
Students planning to transfer after UCC may be able to find assistance from the Transfer Opportunity program to improve their chances for entry into major universities. TOP assists approximately 60 to 80 UCC students each year.
TOP is funded through federal grants as a result of Trio the Federal Educational Opportunity Act of 1964.
According to Sue Archer the program’s administrator, “TOP receives enough federal funding to assist 160 students each year”.
“I have had a student transfer to college as far away as Canada,” said Archer.
Students meeting the criteria need only to go into the TOP office and complete an application.
Dave Treskey , a general studies student, believes TOP provides great opportunities.
“if you plan on transferring, it’s ridiculous to not be in the transfer program,” said Treskey.
The program has a paid tutoring staff separate from the tutoring services offered in ESB. Academic counseling is also available to students in TOP, and participating students will find the ability to schedule meetings with the same tutor or adviser every time.
TOP also offers several other opportunities to participating students for free. The book borrowing program can help students save cash. A campus visitation activity allows students to investigate other perspective college campuses. Scholarship workshops are also available showing students how to fill out required paperwork for successful scholarship applications.
The TOP room is located in the student center next to the cafeteria and is frequently buzzing with students and staff.
Eligibility Criteria
To become a participant in the Transfer Opportunity Program, students must:
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Have an academic need
- Be enrolled full-time
- Meet at least one of the following: If you are low income, Your parents did not receive a bachelor’s degree or if you have a documented physical or learning disability.
