Tuition Increases for Tutoring

The proposition to raise tuition and general student fees by a total of $5 per credit has been read before the board once and is scheduled for a second reading at the April board meeting.  If the proposition passes this second reading, it will be officially adopted.

This $5 will include a $3 increase in tuition which will result in a price of $75 per credit.  This is still the lowest tuition rate in the state for community colleges.

The remaining $2 will be an increase in student fees that will help pay for all UCC tutoring services including the online tutoring service Smarthinking.  This money will also help pay for other life mentoring programs which will aim to assist students outside the scope of classroom success.

The Smarthinking tutoring center can be accessed by clicking on the Smarthinking link on the Angel homepage.  Each student has 300 hours of online tutoring available to them per term.  Hours are metered as follows:

Live drop-in sessions: “Metered” to the minute of time spent working with an e-structor plus 7 minutes for administration

Submitted questions: 27 minutes

Submitted essays or career writing: 42 minutes

Paragraph Submissions: 27 minutes

Pre-scheduled sessions: 37 minutes (30 minutes spent working with an e-structor plus 7 minutes for administration) Student accounts will be charged 37 minutes unless they cancel at least 48 hours before the appointment time.

For more information or for user help with Smarthinking, see Vicki Formosa in the ESB building.

The Mainstream is a student publication of Umpqua Community College.
