UCC Students Coast to Leadership Summit

The Associated Students of Umpqua Community College shuttled approximately 15 students from UCC to the second annual 2012 Southern Oregon College Student Leadership Summit in Coos Bay’s Southwestern Oregon Community College Saturday, Nov. 3. The event required a registration fee of $35 which was paid for by ASUCC.

Some of the workshops   on the agenda for the conference included goal setting, time management strategies, learning to think on your feet, learning leadership skills from different media formats, understanding different personality and communication styles, and employment search skills.“This experience has reinforced the leadership skills I have been learning since I was elected” said ASUCC Vice President, Freddy Gompf.

UCC students met at the flag pole in front of the college’s administration building at 7 a.m. to catch an hour and a half ride that would inevitably lead to new leadership skills. The event kept all participants busy, the conference lasting all day beginning at 9 a.m. and not ending until 5 p.m.

“I got up at 3 a.m. and was exhausted by the end of the day, we learned so much,” said UCC student Kingsley Hubbell.

Approximately 50 students from three community colleges were present to improve their knowledge in areas of leadership.

Students and faculty from three different schools attended, teaching and learning key points of leadership and success strategies in an effort to perfect student leadership skills.

UCC student life director Marjan Coester, instructed workshops for participants, ranging from learning leadership from movies and media, called Lights Camera Action ,to team building and team development serving up a recipe for success.
