Supplies:

  • Sharpie markers: multiple colors
  • Glass: look for glass in packaging which says microwave or oven safe; glass in a picture frame, plates, bowls, mugs and stemware usually work
  • Desired design
  • Rubbing alcohol or white vinegar
  • Rag or paper towel
  • Oven
  • Clean baking sheet
  • Gloves

I have made my fair share of craft projects from Pinterest and YouTube, some that were simple and easy, and others that were dreadful and just down right impossible. But not all online crafts are bad. I found this Sharpie Art on Glass project on both Pinterest and YouTube, which usually means it’s accomplishable. It was so easy, quick and striking.

I used the sharpie art on glass technique to make a personalized commemorative sign for home décor. The sign can be decorated with phrases such as I am UCC or UCC Strong, any logo like the Paris peace symbol, or the popular Oregon state outline with a heart inside. Another idea is to create a favorite sports

team logo or create a favorite cartoon character for your kids.

The project is so easy that you can do this in a couple hours and even with children.

Design:

Clean the glass to prepare it. Wear gloves or avoid touching the glass to prevent the oils from your hands getting on the glass. Wipe the glass with rubbing alcohol or white vinegar. Dry the glass off with a rag or paper towel.

Print out your design on paper if you’re using the design as a tracing template.

Center the glass on top of the design. Use the sharpies to trace the design onto the glass starting with the outline first, then fill in with color if desired. Darker colors show better. Avoid touching the glass to prevent smearing. If you have a design of your own, draw it straight on to the glass.

To prevent the design from rubbing off, let the colored glass set untouched overnight before placing in the oven.

Do NOT preheat oven. Place the colored glass on a baking sheet and place in the cool oven on the lowest temperature (I used 170 degrees). Leave the glass in the oven for approximately an hour and then turn off the oven.  Do NOT remove the glass from the oven until it is completely cool to the touch to prevent the glass from breaking.
