Childcare resources available for UCC families

Published by J.R. Williams on

Local families, especially students, are struggling to find adequate affordable child care after the multitude of child care facility closures due to COVID-19 and new state regulations.

Oregon has been a child care desert since the 90s, and that has led families with very limited childcare options if any.

“Oregon is currently in a childcare desert,” said Shelby Shaw, a Glide special education teacher, former child care board member and daycare owner, in a phone interview.

Lists for open spots at active and licensed child care providers are closing and updating constantly, according to numerous childcare facility sources. The best option for desperate parents to get the most up-to-date information is by calling 211 or 1-866-698-6155 for information about local childcare resources. Parents can also check the 211 website or navigateresources.net website by entering a local zip code then selecting “search by category” and then clicking on “Parenting/Child Care” and the Child Care file. Additionally, UCC students and families near UCC have access to Maple Corner Montessori.

Check the licensing status of any childcare facility through 211 or check the facility’s licenses are clearly posted.

funds to help pay childcare costs at an Oregon
